Cascarino begs Man United not to offer top star a new deal because he irritates him.
Tony Cascarino, a former Chelsea midfielder, has advised Manchester United not to extend the contract of Bruno Fernandes.
The midfielder joined United from Sporting CP in 2020 and is expected to sign a new five-year contract.
The new contract for the Portuguese would see him earn more than his current £100,000 per week deal, which puts him in the bottom tier of Old Trafford’s wage structure.
According to reports from Portugal, he will make £220,000 per week under his new contract.
“It’s an odd set of circumstances,” Cascarino told talkSPORT, “where you’re offering someone with three years left on their contract a new five-year agreement.”
“When he scored a hat-trick against Leeds [on the season’s opening day], you thought to yourself, ‘Wow, this is going to be a special season for United.’
“He irritates me; he’s a gifted player, but he’s always flailing his arms around.” It appears that he is always criticizing and moaning about his squad during the game.
“Don’t get me wrong, Roy Keane did that, but he didn’t do it by waving his arms around; he did it because he wanted to have a go at you, which I understand.”
“However, I am irritated when a player neglects to play and is preoccupied with other issues while the game is in progress.
“I don’t think they should be offering him a deal yet. If he gets to the stage where he is playing like the Bruno Fernandes who first arrived at the club over the next year I would be saying yeah to a new contract. Not now.”
